Ok so I was a little scared, but my first horseback riding experience was great! I was quite shocked at how little instruction you are given when you first get on the horse. They tell you to get in the saddle, hand you the reins and say, right (motioning to the right), left (motioning to the left) and stop (pulling back on the reins), have fun!
My first thought was ummm are you serious?! As soon as we got on the trails I realized that these horses walk this same exact trail over and over, day after day. There is little chance of getting lost in the woods, etc. I was one of the lucky ones that got a frisky horse that decided it would rather run than walk. This was somewhat disconcerting at first. I kept saying to it, “Why are you running?!” But once I got used to the reins and we settled into a nice pace with the other horses all was well.
All in all it was an enjoyable experience. (My butt is incredibly sore however.) I kept thinking….I really don’t know how those cowboys do this all day! Or even how actors playing cowboys do this all day for 3-6 weeks at a time!
Happy Trails people!
