A summer treat; the farmer’s market

It’s summertime and all that exspensive fruit is finally in season! The pools are open, the kids are out of school and the farmer’s markets are officially open.

Depending on where you live, farmer’s markets may not be a staple of your summer experience. However in most parts of NY state they are fairly common. To see where farmer’s markets are located in your area go here.

Some markets are more complex than others, selling flowers, vegetables, free-range meats, cheeses, etc. But no matter what kind of market is available to you it is worth checking out.

Here are a few pointers for shopping at a farmer’s market:

  • Bring cash — most markets will only accept cash. Obviously it would be difficult to run your credit card from their small tent on the sidewalk/riverbank/parking lot.
  • Go early. The freshest stuff goes fast so wake up early and beat the rush, believe me it’s worth it.
  • Be adventurous. So you have never tried a radish before… live a little!
  • Bring your own bag. Some of the markets (especially the organic ones) might not use plastic or have any shopping bags, so bring a canvas bag or tote if you have one.
  • Go with a budget in mind. All those fresh yummy goods can add up. Some markets can get very pricey so have a plan of attack before you get there.
