Never underestimate the power of a plant.

I had somewhat given up on indoor plants a while ago for two reasons: 1- I live in an apt without a patio and therefore do not get great sunlight to grow things. 2- I have a cat who likes to eat things.

However, despite these reasons I decided to try growing an indoor basil plant. I bought a small plant at a craft fair, transplanted it to a bigger pot and put it on a window sill that gets direct sun light. I am proud to say that not only is it alive but it is doing very well! (I have even used some of the basil leaves in a couple of dinner dishes. Go me!)

I have always been a little envious of people who have fabulous gardens. Beautiful flowers cascading up their driveways, a house filled with fragrant potted herbs and edible flowers. It seemed like such a mystery. How do they get these lovely things to grow and flourish? Why can’t I keep a bonsai tree alive?!

I am starting to realize that with a little effort and some research I just might be able to have some beautiful things growing in my own home. My tiny basil plant is giving me hope. Every time I water it or notice a new leaf I feel a small sense of accomplishment. Next stop: rosemary!
