My first teetotaled movie review is….Woody Allen’s Scoop. I almost saw something else and then decided to see Scoop instead. Turns out it was a good idea to change my mind. Scoop was entertaining, interesting, cooky and fun.
Allen played a major part in the film which can sometimes be slightly annoying - when a director casts himself in a big role - but it really worked for this film. He was perfect for the part and he and Scarlett Johansson have great chemistry on screen. In fact this is one of the best casts I have seen in a while. All too often I see a film and think well that was pretty good except for so and so’s crapola performance. Not this time. Allen, Johansson and Hugh Jackman not only fit their roles perfectly but they all seemed to really enjoy themselves playing these characters. The supporting cast is not too shabby either.
Ok so Jackman as the hunky aristocrat was not a huge stretch, but he gave a confident, sexy and fun performance. Johansson plays a somewhat geeky/quirky, charming yet sexy college journalism student who is in pursuit of the story of a lifetime, tracking down the tarot card serial killer. Her search teams her up with a magician played by Allen. I don’t want to give to much of the plot away so let’s just say their zany search for the killer leads them to the upper class world of Jackman and mayhem ensues.
Scoop is a well rounded film, it makes you laugh, it keeps you guessing and it has sexy Hugh Jackman! The ending is somewhat predictable but not boring or disappointing. The film leads you on a wild chase and gives you resolution and justice at the end. It is a fun ride and worth the price of admission.
Scoop gets a Teetotaled thumbs up!
