Ok so the closer I get to 30, and the closer I get to being a parent the more I am starting to realize what beingĀ a parent will mean. I am not talking about the heavy emotional stuff, unconditional love and a deeper bond with my husband and all that. I keep thinking about what I will look like through my own child’s eyes. I think about the way I viewed my parents as a kid/teen and how my friends viewed their parents. And all I keep thinking about is, oh no are my kids going to think I am a dork?!
I am pretty sure the answer is YES. I’m a pretty hip cat if I do say so myself, but I am pretty positive that my kids won’t think so! I mean let’s face it, no one is cool to their own kids, at least not while their offspring are under the age of 25. I am beginning to devise a coolness plan. It doesn’t have much to it yet, but it involves being seen as relatively tolerable, or dare I say not un-cool to my own kids. It will involve a lot of smoke and mirrors and possibly some bribes but I think it might just do the trick.
The thought of a bunch of kids standing around at the mall and saying “Oh No! Your mom is here! Duck!” and pointing to ME makes me quite sad. I would love to think of myself as the hip mom, the one that the kids ask to pick them up because I don’t drive a station wagon and I stillĀ listen to semi-decent music. But since I am not going to be the mom who lets you smoke pot in her basement or buys you beer at 17, I think my chances of coolness to the teen posse are not looking good.
Oh well. Maybe I won’t reach any level of coolness. But if all else fails I will pull a My Dad and show up at the school dance in my pj’s and karate slippers and come IN, oh yes I said all the way in to the gym and look for my child at the end of the dance so as to find them quickly and be the first one out of the parking lot. Embarassing…slightly. Memorable, heck yea! And if I can’t reach coolness I am going to have a lock on memorable for sure.
