I am not one of those women who is into football. I don’t hate it, even went to a professional game once and had a blast, but it is not my favorite thing to watch on tv. I was a flag twirler (like color-guard) in high school so I attended every football game, participated in every parade and still could not fall in love with the sport. However, the more rules I learn, and the more I watch the more enjoyable it becomes. Afterall, what fun is it watching something you don’t understand?
But I have found that the way to make me, and possibly lots of women, get into football is…..wait for it………SNACKS. Yes I said snacks. As someone who enjoys to cook, entertain and eat, snacks are the way to get me to enjoy football. I can try out new appetizers on my husband and my friends, and I can enjoy tasty snacks while the game is on (which really makes anything more enjoyable doesn’t it?).
As someone who is not a drinker, the old fashioned beer-snack just won’t cut it, neither will the hot wings. So then what kinds of snacks? I go for fairly healthy ones, spicy black bean chips with organic salsa, veggie platters, fruit and cheese, etc. Another good game snack is Spinach Parmesan Balls. I would like to take credit for this recipe, but it is not mine. It is from CBS - Chefs on a shoestring. You can find it here.
So if you like to cook, experiment with some new snacks for the next Sunday afternoon game. A nice array of treats and a fun atmosphere in your living room can go a long way to help you enjoy the game.
Sidenote: Whenever I watch football I cannot help but hear the old cheer from my high school cheerleaders…when it was first & 10 they would cheer “First & 10, WOO! First & 10″ over and over and over. I hope to someday get that cheer out of my head.
