Answer: baskets, baskets, baskets!
Ok so too simple of an answer? I have no closet space so buy baskets?! Yes.
As someone who has rented for several years, the only thing that has kept me sane in a small closet existance has been the use of decorative baskets for storage. Go to any craft store, Pier 1 or Christmas Tree Shops and you will see an array of baskets. Every shape, color, size, some with lids, some lined with nice fabric, etc. The possibilities are endless.
When you don’t have a lot of space organization is extremely diffifcult and most furniture purchases must also have a duel purpose. Use an old trunk as a coffee table because it also has extra storage in it. Buy a huge entertainment center with lots of cabinets to store all of your movies, cd’s and other misc items. You are forced to decorate in a functional way rather than following your own personal style.
Buy using baskets throughout your space you can keep things neat and organized. I use baskets for everything! I don’t have enough cabinet space to put my garbage can and recycling underneath the sink so I use a nice large basket filled with bags to keep my bottles neat before they go out to the bin. I use baskets in my living room to store extra items and in my kitchen to keep boxes of cereal and snacks neat and out of the way. I use baskets to store extra towels and to keep cords and computer gadgets neat and tucked away inside the closet. You can use baskets as garbage cans and hampers as well.
Baskets really do the trick when you are short on space, especially if you have children or multiple pets. So next time you are frustrated by the lack of storage space in your home, go buy some baskets and see what you can come up with.
