Memory is a funny thing.

Why do we remember certain things and not others? Isn’t it strange how some of the most seemingly insignificant moments sear themselves to your brain for all time? Your memory holds on to it so tightly as if it is the most important thing you need to know. Maybe in some strange way it is.

I consider myself to have a pretty powerful memory. The earliest memories I can readily retrieve are from when I was about 3 or so. Some are extremely vivid and some are more like snapshots. I often wonder if there is a message in these brief memories. Why did this moment stick and so many others fade away?

I guess if you believe in some of the hypnosis theories than pretty much everything is stored in your memory somewhere, its just that you can’t find it..or something. I don’t know if I believe in hypnosis but it is a neat idea - that everything is banked somewhere in a deep vault in your brain and it takes the right effort or the right person to find it.

There are some memories that annoy me to no end, either they are sad, scary or just plain dumb and I wish my brain would have chosen that particular annoying memory to dump. But for some reason it didn’t. Maybe all the random memories you wish you didn’t have are all connecting pieces waiting to be woven together. There must be some rhyme or reason to this memory thing. Right?

I have read that the random things that come up in your dreams (like silly memories from a high school play, etc) are messages that can be decoded. Only you can understand them and it is up to you to figure out why your brain choose that particular moment in time to get through to you in such a way. I often find interesting memories tucked into my dreams. Sometimes they make perfect sense and sometimes they just confuse me. I continue to wake up every morning remembering my dreams and I constantly have random memories popping into my head at the strangest times. Not sure how it is all connected, but I am hoping my brain will clue me in somehow.
