Into the dark.

What happens to us when we die? The age old question that no one has an answer for but almost everyone has a theory on.

Pretty much every religion (except the ones believing in reincarnation) believe that the hereafter is a spendid place where you will receive great rewards (if you lived a good life) or be punished severely for your wrongdoing. The common thread being, there is a hereafter.

Obviously there is no definite answer, so it is a matter of faith. But what about science? Can an afterlife, or the lack thereof, be scienticically proven? Probably, but I am not sure I want to know one way or the other. It is more comforting to have a glimer of hope than an answer you can’t handle.

My own experiences make me hope that there is indeed some sort of moving on, whether it be our spirit moving forward, being reincarnated, etc. Something happens, I think.

But what if you don’t believe in anything at all? When you die, you turn to dust and that is it. Well if that is what happens then you won’t know it anyway, so no problem.

My issue with the heaven and hell theory is, what if you don’t believe in either? Can you be sent somewhere you don’t even believe in?! Can that happen?

Movies often try to answer the afterlife question with their own versions of heaven and hell. Ever see What Dreams May Come, or Constantine? Both films paint a rather vivid portrait of heaven and a terrifying look into hell.

I would like to think I would be on the good list but even if I am, who knows! Here’s hoping…

"A truly good book teaches me better than to read it. I must soon lay it down, and commence living on its hint. What I began by reading, I must finish by acting."
