A recent episode of Ugly Betty got my husband and I talking about how many provocative female images are on television. Women are often complaining or just noticing how often men talk about women/boobs, how often they take notice of them, etc. But is it because men are more interested in that sort of thing, or because there is just more of it to look at?

On a recent episode of Ugly Betty, Betty went to a male strip club to find out if her bosses girlfriend had hired a stripper to pretend to be her boyfriend (I know, I know) and the scene involved lots of hunky looking guys stripper outfits. I was like whoa don’t see that too often on regular tv! My husband took notice immediately and said ok, you got a kick out of seeing all those cute guys right? Well imagine being a guy and almost every program, every commercial, has girls in bikinis, girls on the beach, etc, etc. Men are bombarded with these sexy images all day, everyday.

So it got me thinking, what would I do if all I saw every day were guys in speedos running along the beach, no shirts, provocative and sexy? Maybe men really are being bombarded by all these images and it has less to do with them always wanting to look and more to do with the fact that they cannot help but look because it is everywhere. If you turn on the television and take notice of how many women are in lingerie, bathing suits, etc, and then compare that to how many men you see wearing nothing but underwear, well the odds are you will see a ton more female images than male.

It got me thinking about the reasoning for this. It is because men want to see it and women don’t? Probably not. It is because men are in charge of all television programming? No. Hmmm, so what is it? It is because female actresses think they need to take off their clothes while male actors aren’t asked as often? Perhaps. At any rate, it has given me a new perspective when it comes to men. I think the some of the ladies on TV need to follow the example of some of their male co-stars and button up.
