I have heard many times in my life that music helps you work/learn/study. For the most part this has not been true for me. I always found it hard to concentrate in the dorms when people would have music/tv blasting. I never enjoyed sitting in a cubicle next to someone who loves to listen to Dave Matthews band. I found all that noise to be very distracting.
I had a professor for one of my communications classes in college that played classical music for 10 minutes before class started. As everyone was coming in and filling up their seats, nice soft classical music would be playing over the speaker system. She said it was because it stimulated the brain and would help us stay more focused during class. Not sure whether we were anymore focused or not. Especially since a cute guy in my dorm was also in the class so I am sure I spent more time checking him out them focusing on her communications theories.
Anyway…music music music. I love listening to music in the car, love to sing along and blast it and even dance at a stop light now and then. But listening to music while I work was never really part of my routine. My husband on the other hand almost always listens to music while he works. It energizes him and helps him concentrate on what he is doing. He encourgaged me to start listening to a local classical music station while I am writing. It has only been a few days but already I am warming up to the idea. I keep it very low, almost too low just so it is barely in the background. And so far I actually like it! It is nice to have some background noise besides other people’s noise. Maybe this music while you work thing isn’t so bad after all.
