For Peeps Sake!

Do you remember eating peeps as a child? The little yellow marshmellow-ish candies that came out around Easter. You could buy them in a supermarket or in CVS for about $1.99. They were pretty great, but I didn’t understand what they could be made of, besides marshmellow, that would allow you to store them in your cabinet for months at a time.

Did you know they also make Valentine peeps, Peeps eggs, Marshmellow ghosts, pumpkins, snowmen and Christmas trees? All made of wonderful marshmellow, and other assorted chemicals.

These are the ingredients as listed on a package of Valentine peeps: sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, artifical flavors, citric acid, potassium sorbate, artifical colors, Red #40 Lake, Red #40, Red #3.

Hmmmm…

I was hoping it would say marshmellow and sugar, or is sugar, corn syrup and gelatin how you make marshmellow? At any rate I am always a little disappointed when something so delicious contains random ingredients that I, A) don’t know what they are, B) know they are random chemicals and not sure if they are edible.

At any rate, I have a sister-in-law who is absolutly in love with peeps, of any holiday variety, so I will be mailing her some.

Here is a tip: Never read the ingredients of something you really like if you are at all in doubt it is 100% natural, or low-fat, or good for you. Chances are it is not good for you and now you will feel guilty everytime you eat it, or stop eating it. Which I guess is a good thing but is kind of depressing when it is a favorite snack.
