I barely made it through last nights show. I closed my eyes a few times towards the end of the very very long program. So the biggies…Jennifer Hudson -no surprise, Forest Whitaker - no surprise, Helen Mirren - no surprise, The Departed - no surprise. All in all not too many surprises. Ok so Scorsese was a pretty big surprise, and so was Alan Arkin. But the night seemed pretty predictable for the most part. Even during the pre-show Kate Blanchett and Penelope Cruz both commented on how they know they wouldn’t win. Did they really now that or were they just being humble? How boring is it to sit there all night, all glammed up, knowing you won’t win.
The Oscars are tough for us East Coasters since we have to stay up until 11:30 or so to catch all of the “good” awards. Which might be why they wait until the last 20 minutes to hand out Best Director, Best Picture and Best Actor and Actress. If they handed those out first people would probably tune out early, and possibly leave the auditorium early to hit some of those parties!
All in all pretty run of the mill Oscars. Kate Blanchett was the bell of the ball in my eyes in her stunning Armani Prive gown, and Nicole Kidman looked amazing in red. There were also a lot of fashion duds last night, I will not name names to protect the fashion inept.
Ellen did a decent job. It was a little too goofy for my taste, but hey it’s a tough gig.
I wish they would speed up the awards and televise some of those wild celebrity parties! Now there is something I would like to see. Award winning actresses falling on their duff from drinking too much.
