I only caught the first 1.5 segments of Oprah’s Oscar special, but I loved the idea. She paired Oscar winners and had them interview each other. The first couple of pairings, George Clooney and Julia Roberts and Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman were a big hit. It helped that these 2 pairs were already friends and quite comfortable with each other.
They obviously did not ask the kind of pointed (read:intrusive) questions a reporter would ask, but they were able to get some candid and joyful answers a reporter probably wouldn’t be able to get.
Julia and George were cute, laughing and being playful the entire interview. The highlight was Brad Pitt calling to tease George about the interview and about being the sexiest man alive (People mag). It was obvious Julia and George really like each other and it was cool to see Hollywood hotshots hanging out as friends, goofing around like regular people.
The idea of celebrities interviewing other celebrities (instead of cheesy show hosts doing it) is brilliant. It is less risque as far as the depth of the questions but it is much more interesting to see two people from the same crazy Hollywood world interacting, then seeing a celebrity sitting there trying to dodge rude questions from Billy Bush or Ryan Seacrest. You actually get to see the real person, the person who is less afraid of answering personal questions and comfortable hanging out with someone who understands their bizarre life.
