I am sure most of you have had these conversations with friends, do you like cats or do you like dogs? You can like both, but most of us like one a bit more than the other.

Up until a few years ago I would have considered myself a dog person. That is, until I adopted my first cat. Now I am whole heartedly a cat person. But, I still love dogs. I enjoy playing with friends dogs and although I do not want a dog right at this moment, I may change my mind someday.

Dogs are terrific companions. Our house always had a dog growing up. I enjoyed playing with dogs, did not mind them sleeping in my bed with me and always considered myself a dog person. But as I got older I realized that while I loved growing up with a dog, my dad was the one who took the dog out at 5 am every morning. I never once got up in my pjs as a child and walked the dog around the yard. The thought of having to do that now…ugh.

So I got my first cat. I was a little apprehensive because I had not met many cats I liked. As a child my neighbor had a mean outdoor cat that liked to bite your hands. But after about 4 minutes with our new kitten, I was sold. Best.pet.ever.

They don’t need to go out to poop, or really go out to do anything and are perfectly content to sit around the house lounging with you. Perfect apartment pet for sure, low maintenance.

Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t begrudge dogs the need to go to the bathroom outside. But at this stage in my life, I am not willing to get up every day at 4 or 5 am to take my pet for a walk. So until such time as I am ready to do so, I am a cat person. Happily enjoying cozy nights on my couch with a 12 pound fur ball who alternates between sweet as pie to naughty and mischievious without so much as a wink.
