I didn’t want to talk about Paris, but….

I wasn’t planning on discussing the Paris Hilton jail situation but the media coverage is so out of hand I can’t help myself. So Paris was sentenced to jail time, who knows if she will even end up serving one day but she was sentenced. Is it fair? If I knew the law better, I would give a definite answer.

Fact is, I don’t know what is commonplace in DUI situations. If every regular Joe who violates their probation after being arrested for DUI also gets 45 days in jail, then sure it sounds fair. But if the judge is using her as an example to scare other celebrities, well then that’s pretty dumb. You are not going to scare rich overindulged socialites by sending one of them to jail for 45 days. It won’t change the strange culture they live in, or the fact that 9 times out of 10 being who they are actually gets them out of trouble, not puts them in it.

Do I feel bad for her? A little bit. Can someone as famous as she is actually serve a normal jail sentence? Of course not, she is going to get threatened and harassed non stop. She is too notorious to just serve her time in peace and go home. The judge should realize that. With the over crowding issues that plague our nation’s jails do we really need to throw the back at Paris Hilton?

As I mentioned, I do not know the ins and outs of the law regarding this matter. But to me it would make sense to hit her where it hurts. Take away her license for the max amount of time, fine her as much as possible and put her on house arrest which will mean she cannot work or film any crappy reality tv. Sending her to jail will only increase the media frenzy and make her even more famous! Does that girl need anymore publicity?

I must add that I think driving while intoxicated is an incredibly serious offense. I do believe people should lose their licenses and undergo some sort of alcohol related programs. There is no excuse for what she did, none. And noone should get off scott free in this case. But I do hope that this judge is as strict with all of his alcohol related cases and is not just making a silly example of a vapid young girl. If he throws the book at her he better throw it at everyone else too.
