The other day we lost power for about an hour due to a thunderstorm. One whole hour without power = agony. It is scary how dependent I am on electricity. The funny thing is I love to camp and “be away from it all”. But while I am in my home I really do rely on the comforts that electricity and technology give me. I am sort of lost without my computer.
I took a cue from my cat during the storm who decided it was the perfect time for a nap (isn’t it always?) and I sat near her, and also near a window for some light, and read while I waited for the lights to blink back on. It was peaceful but I couldn’t help being anxious about the work I was missing out on while the computer was sitting in some sort of electricity-less purgatory. What if someone needs me? What if I miss an important message?
But really, it was only an hour.
And I did miss some messages, but I returned them.
The experience made me laugh at myself though. I think it is important to enjoy forced breaks such as losing power for an hour and next time I will relish the opportunity to lounge with the cat knowing whatever I miss (for the most part) I can catch up on. It’s ok to take a power break.

It’s definitely a different situation when you work out of a home office. Losing power and not being able to watch beloved TV during ‘lounge’ time is one thing, but not being able to check email or return calls during ‘business’ hours usually makes me really antsy.
I don’t know if I would have been able to relax enough to sit down with a book and wait it out. You’re lucky you have a cat to show you the way!

A little synchronicity — your comment on my post came through, just as I’m reading yours. Also a home office here — I actually don’t mind the break. There are always a million other things I need to catch up on.

I need to learn to enjoy the breaks more. I get so caught up in work deadlines…I think I need to focus more on fun deadlines!
