Berkshares

Great Barrington, Massachusetts has created thier own currency of sorts…the Berkshare. I didn’t know it was legal to do this until I read the article and it explained the technicality, “U.S. law prevents states from issuing their own currency but allows private groups to print paper scrip, though not coins, said Lewis Solomon, a professor of law at George Washington University, who studies local currencies.” You can read the full article here. Roughly 280 establishments accept the Berkshares in the Great Barrington area.

Apparently there are similar programs in Ithaca, New York and a few other places as well, who knew?! It is a really neat idea. Makes me wonder if other “private groups” will start printing their own currency? Could I be considered a private group? What about Teetbucks?! Oh I love it! Doesn’t it have a nice ring to it?

Go to Borders to get a Christmas gift and pay in Teetbucks instead of using your ATM card. Hmmm, I think I am on to something here!

Teetbucks coming soon, tell your friends!

On a somewhat different note, many of the elementary teachers around here make their own dollars that the kids earn to buy rewards. It seems to be good motivation.

I can see how that would be a huge hit Jan! I will pass that on to my friends who teach.
