My cat, like most animals, hates the vet. I don’t mean she doesn’t like it, I mean she hates it. She fights with all her might to avoid being put in her pet carrier and every step of the way she lets you know how upset she is. When she gets to the vet, she hides under the examination table and usually cries and complains some more. Not that I blame her, if I were a cat I would hate the vet also. Heck, who really enjoys going to the Dr. right?
However, every time we go to the vet they act like she is the only cat in the world that hates being there. One vet even made some snide comments about how antisocial she must be if this is the way she behaves at the vet. Right because being at the vet brings out the best in our pets! OK! I should ask him how he feels about getting his temperature taken in the backside and see how social he is.
The most recent trip to the vet was pretty typical. When it was time for the vet to clip her nails we gave the usual warnings. She bites, she fights, etc. The Dr. with the help of a nurse and us managed to clip her nails without injury, which believe me is no small feat. It is times like these that I wish my cat could speak English. I would sit her down and say, “Listen, we are making a quick trip to the vet, I know you don’t like it but it will be fast and I will be there and then you won’t have to go back for a whole year. Please don’t bite me when I put you in the carrier and try not to bite the vet this time too, ok? Unless it is that rude guy who called you antisocial, you have my permission to bite him on the wrist.”
I feel guilty every time we have to take her but then I remind myself that she needs to go to get checked out and make sure she is healthy. So she will have to deal. But I can’t help but think, what would that dog whisperer guy do in this situation? You know, if he was also a cat whisperer (not that I think that would work because cats don’t play that!)
