In January, I wrote a couple of posts about the movie ONCE. (FYI - My archives are not up yet but will be soon.) I included the lyrics to the song Falling Slowly in one of my posts. I am very pleased to announce that Falling Slowly won the Oscar for Best Song at this year’s Academy Awards which aired over the weekend. All I can say is, yes, yes, yes, yes! I think the Academy got it right this time! I was worried one of those horrible Enchanted songs was going to take the top spot, thankfully it did not.
From MSN:
Glen Hansard of the Irish band the Frames and Marketa Irglova, both non-actors who starred in the musical romance “Once,” won the best-song Oscar for “Falling Slowly,” one of several tunes they wrote for the film.
“What are we doing here? This is mad,” Hansard said, recounting the low-budget history of “Once.” “It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand. We never thought we’d come into a room like this and be in front of all you people.”
The song won over three nominated tunes from “Enchanted” written by composer Alan Menken, an eight-time Oscar winner, and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, a three-time winner, whose previous academy prizes included their song and score collaborations for “Pocahontas.”
For those of who you missed the broadcast I believe there are a couple of videos on YouTube of their acceptance speeches. The Oscars did something they have never done before, at least to my knowledge. They let a winner whose speech was cut off come back out at the end of the show to give their speech. Marketa was cut off by the orchestra and did not get to say one single word after Glen spoke. Jon Stewart had her come back out on stage right before the end of the show to deliver her speech. I am not sure whether it was his idea or the producers had a soft spot for her but either way she was able to come back out and share her thoughts. She spoke beautifully and it was incredible to watch someone so truly deserving win.
So if you haven’t already seen this movie…go see it! ONCE
