Teetotaled.com is a weblog about nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices, self-improvement, and overall enjoyment of life.
I recently signed up for the SELF Challenge 2008 - a 3 month fitness challenge. One of my friends signed up for it and asked me to be her buddy so I figured what the heck! Like every woman I know, this time of year I always think about the impending shorts season and wish I could lose that extra 5 pounds. So here I go…
Once you sign up for the challenge you keep track of your workouts as well as create a food diary on self.com. I have utilzed a food diary in the past and it is always very eye opening. You never think you are eating as much as you really are and when you count every calorie, well the results are usually surprising. My problem isn’t keeping track of my diet and cutting back, it is the working out part. I hate, hate, hate working out. I hate the gym, I hate the treadmill, I just hate it. I do enjoy riding my bike and doing other exercise related activities but since the weather is still in the 40’s I have to find other ways to exercise for the time being. Thankfully, the SELF Challenge gives you lots of ideas for easy and quick indoor workouts. All you need is a set of 5 pound weights and they provide you with slideshows and videos of easy at-home exercises you can do.
The workout log also allows you to log time doing normal everyday activities; like mopping the floor, walking the dog, pushing the baby stroller and doing general house cleaning. Who knew doing laundry every single day could pay off and become part of my workout log?!
This is only the first week so I am curious to see how psyched I am about my food log 6 weeks from now. I’ll just keep thinking about those shorts….

I really enjoy housework and yardwork and even dog walking when I think of them as workouts. Which are boring.

If I sign up and go through the whole thing, will I look like those girls on that site?
My First Wife and I are going to sign up for a year membership at The Big City Community Center where workout stuff abounds. Otherwise, there’s nothing like a good long walk. I love walking outdoors. So far this cold, cold month of March I’ve managed to get in 43 miles. About 1/3 of what I’d like to do in the warm summer months.
