Decoration Day

It’s that time of year again, Memorial Day weekend. A weekend most people look forward to as the unofficial kick out to the summer season - although it is still spring. In this part of the country it is usually considered the first possible weekend that one is able to go swimming or camping.

For those of you who only know Memorial Day as a free day off from work, here is a little background courtesy of Wikipedia:

Memorial Day is a United States Federal Holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (observed in 2008 on May 26). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include those who died in any war or military action.

Most Americans will celebrate this weekend by throwing or attending a BBQ, going to see some fireworks, or going away for the weekend. This year, in the midst of all this ‘holiday’ fun, let’s try to remember all of the men and women who have, and are currently, fighting to protect our way of life. It is a simple thing to take one minute out of your day this Memorial Day and send up a positive thought or a prayer for all those who serve in the military. I think all of our soldiers serving currently overseas could really use it right now.

Have a safe weekend!
