I always thought that eating on the front porch (or patio) was just as normal as eating in the backyard or on the deck. Apparently, it is only (or at least mostly) the Italians who think eating in the front yard is as normal as eating in the backyard. When I mentioned to my husband that I wanted to eat on the front porch he laughed. It wasn’t until an Italian friend and my mother (also part Italian) mentioned it also that he knew I was serious. With our large deck in the backyard it had never occurred to him to consider eating out front as well.
I don’t know what cultural differences make Italian people more comfortable eating in the front yard than other people, but boy do we love a screened in front porch! Eating in a porch is even more fun than eating on the deck because you have more protection from bugs and the sun.
It makes me wonder if other nationalities enjoy eating on the front porch, or eating somewhere else that may seem unusual.
Do you eat in the front yard, the backyard or both? Or do you think eating outside is icky?

When I was a kid there were certain places we ate. It all depended on what was on the “menu.”
We don’t eat outside, but have in the past. But you have tossed me some fodder for a nostalgic blog post. Hmmmm….
In the meantime, enjoy your front porch…and My First Wife is Italian, by the way.
