When I was a child I remember hearing the song Barbara Ann by the Beach Boys often. For some reason it was always playing at my babysitters house - apparently they were big Beach Boys fans. At any rate, the song popped into my head again the other day and I realized I had some of the lyrics wrong.
Here is the chorus of the song:
Oh barbara ann, take my hand
Barbara ann
You got me rockin’ and a-rollin’
Rockin’ and a-reelin’
Barbara ann ba ba
Ba barbara ann
For some reason I used to think the lyrics were: Oh Barbara ann, she is my man, Barbara Ann, you got me rockin and a-rollin….Now I had the second half right but what the heck is up with - she is my man?! Barbara Ann is in fact a woman (I am pretty sure) and why would the Beach Boys sing about a woman who is a man?! Of course once I realized my mistake I couldn’t get that darn song out of my head all night. At least I got a good chuckle out of it.
Are there any songs that you have replaced the lyrics to only to realize later how far off you are?

All the time… I have no idea what Nirvana sings on most of their songs. Same with Creedence Clearwater Revival. “there’s a bad moon on the rise” has always been “there’s a bathroom on the right”. And Elton John…”Hold me closer Tiny Dancer” is clearly “Hold me closer Tony Danza”. And “she’s got electric boots” became “she’s got electric boobs”… The list goes on for me…

VE - Clearly you should be a songwriter! Hold me closer Tony Danza is definitely the kind of lyric I can appreciate (and would have probably made up also!)
