Start thinking of those resolutions…or not

Christmas season has me thinking about New Years Eve, and the new year in general. 2009 is just around the corner! As soon as you get comfortable writing one year on your checks and in your date book, it’s time to switch gears :)

Whenever the new year approaches, I think about new year’s resolutions. I have never been one to make resolutions, I think if you want to change something or stop doing something you should just do it, don’t wait for January 1st. But it sure it a novel idea. It seems that most peoples’ resolutions have something to do with the holiday season gluttony. For example: after Christmas I will stop eating so many sweets/stop drinking so much/start going to the gym again/stop spending so much money shopping. These don’t really seem like resolutions to me. Just things that you know you can’t and shouldn’t do all the time, but instead of just stopping them you make a resolution about them.

So once a resolution is made, then what? Does anyone ever really stick to their resolutions? Has anyone ever said that come January 1st I will stop smoking forever, and actually stopped smoking forever? I personally don’t know anyone who has made a major resolution (not counting silly things like, I will chew less gum) and actually stuck to it.

So if you are one of those rare birds who made a life changing resolution and stuck to it, tell me about it!

I don’t think I’ve ever done an actual “New Year’s resolution.” Probably because I’m such a contrarian, I refuse to do what other people are doing. I have set arbitrary goals about eating better or exercising starting on a certain date though. Just not THAT date.

I say we start a new trend and make St. Patrick’s Day resolutions! ;)
