Something magical happened this weekend, I was able to go outside without a wool coat on. I have been shushing people for weeks thinking we were totally jinxed because they kept saying oh spring is coming, spring is coming! Living in NY state I know better than to say the word “spring” until it hasn’t snowed in at least 4 weeks. I almost…almost…said it this weekend.
Not only were the birds out, and singing, in full force all weekend but even the neighborhood kids seemed to hear the call of spring. Several little boys were running up and down the street all day long, another neighborhood kid rang my doorbell yesterday afternoon selling candy bars for some school fundraiser. Seriously, going door to door in early March in this area? Not usually a great idea. Partly because you are at serious risk for slipping and falling on the ice and partly because no one wants to open the door and feel the 20 degree wind whip through their living room. But this weekend, this weekend my door bell rang, I opened it, bought a candy bar and even stood there talking for a minute with the door wide open. No wind, no ice, no falling, nothing!
I do know better than to get my hopes up though. The snow shovels are all still out, the snow brush is easily accessible in my back seat and my coat and scarves will remain hanging in the coat closet for months to come. Winter, you have broken my heart more times than I can count and I won’t let you do it this year! I am not going to say…that word…until I am sure beyond a doubt that you have packed up and shipped off.
UPDATE: Not 4 hours after I wrote the above and it is snowing…..again.

Bah humbug. It snowed here. It rarely snows here and yet we’ve had it all four months of winter this year.
ps - I’ve never seen a gun big enough to jump…

Impossible to respond to that without the use of off color jokes so instead I will simply say

Yesterday at noon: 51 degrees and I went for a two mile walk. Yesterday at 4:00 pm: 32 degrees and “What the…?”
This morning at 5:30 am: 19 degrees and “Aww, man? Not again.”
