A simple “bless you” goes a long way

This past Sunday something small but very uplifting happened to me at church. We got to the point in the mass where the pastor said peace be with you…give each other a sign of peace. Which signals the parishioners to shake hands with all those in their immediate vicinity. As I turned around to shake the hands of the people sitting in the pew behind me, one of the women sitting behind me took my hand in both of her hands and said “Peace be with you, and many blessings on your child.”

You see, now that I am several months pregnant I regularly get comments from people about it. Usually they are from complete strangers and occur out of the blue. I will hear a voice next to me say, “When is your due date, is it a boy or a girl, what is the name, etc, etc, etc.” I don’t normally mind this although I find it a bit odd at times that a complete stranger would just start firing off questions without even so much as an introductory hello. People are curious though and usually ask those things with a smile so I don’t mind answering.

However, this moment in church was the first time someone took the time to genuinely wish me well, without any questions at all, just a bless you with no interrogation attached. I must have had a smile on my face for the next two hours.

A simple “bless you” sure can go a long way!
