Write to customer service when you’re NOT complaining

How many of us have written an email or called a customer service number to report terrible service? I know I have! While I do think it is appropriate to complain when you receive truly horrendous service, I also think it is important to compliment those that go above and beyond.

A few years ago when I purchased a new car, I decided to use a bank other than my usual bank for the car loan. The young woman who helped me set it up was incredibly professional and friendly and made the experience stress-free and easy. That is usually not the case when dealing with banks, am I right!?

When I got home from the appointment at the bank I immediately wrote a short email to that branch’s customer service department, gave them the woman’s name and told them what an unusually pleasant experience I had. I assumed no one would write me back, but it felt good to compliment someone on a job well done. To my surprise I received a personal email from the manager of the bank letting me know that the email I wrote would be going into the employees permanent file and would have a positive influence when it came time for her raise/review meeting. The email that took me less than a minute to compose could have (and hopefully did have) a positive influence on the career of the woman I wrote about.

I had another similar experience today mailing a package oversears to a relative. International shipping is quite expensive and can also be quite confusing. There are custom forms depending on the size and content of your package, and there are also outrageous fees, etc. I went to a different post office as the one we tried first quoted us an insane amount to send a small box to our destination. Thankfully the woman who waited on me was not only extremely knowledgeable about international shipping she was also kind enough to teach me a couple of tricks on how to bundle my packages and save over $25.00 from the rate that was originally quoted to me. Now the package is happily on its way…So what did I do when I came home? I immediately sent an email praising that branch for their professionalism and friendliness. Maybe someone will read it and it will have some positive influence…maybe it won’t, but at least I put something positive out there in the universe. I think this planet could use some more positive energy floating around out there!

So the next time someone does something that really makes your day better, easier, or happier, let them/or their higher ups know about it. Can’t hurt to have some good karma come back to you, right!? :-)

In a time of often horrible customer service this is a great way to encourage those who give you great service.

You are completely right. I’ve written a few of those kinds of notes myself. I don’t know the end results, but I do know that I got blessed by the people who served me politely and professionally.

    Well said Paul!
